Das wichtigste aber war, dafs auf der „PananglikanischenBischofskonferenz" zu Lambeth 1888, welche als Vertretungder Kirche gilt und von sämtlichen englischen Prälaten be-sucht wird, der Socialismus in die Liste der zur Besprechunggelangenden Gegenstände aufgenommen ward. Die Gilde desheiligen Mathäus hatte an die „most reverend and rightreverend fathei'S in God " ein ehrerbietiges Memorial über-sandt, in dem sie lebhaft für den Socialismus Partei nahm.Auch die Stellung der Bischöfe war eine sympathische; eswurde den Geistlichen ausdrücklich erlaubt, an den Vereinenund Versammlungen der Socialisten Teil zu nehmen 1 .

Ein Rückblick zeigt, wie in England der Socialismus,dessen blofser Name auf dem Festlande vielfach Schreckenund die Vorstellung von Barrikaden hervorruft, ein Mittelder friedlichen Fortentwicklung und Minderung jener socialenSchwierigkeiten geworden ist, an denen heute Europa krankt.Auch solche, welche seine Theorie, die Fortsetzung der
