The Swarthmore Lectureship was establishedby the Woodbrooke Extension Committee, at ameeting held December 7th, 1907 : the minute ofthe Committee providing for " an annual lectureon some subject relating to the message and workof the Society of Friends ." The name " Swarth-more " was chosen in memory of the home ofMargaret Fox, which was always open to theearnest seeker after Truth, and from which lovingwords of sympathy and substantial material helpwere sent to fellow-workers.

The Lectureship has a two-fold purpose : first,to interpret further to the members of the Societyof Friends their Message and Mission; and,secondly, to bring before the public the spirit,the aims and the fundamental principles of theFriends.
