These reflections have been directedtowards possible improvements in the tech-nique of modern Capitalism by the agency ofcollective action. There is nothing in themwhich is seriously incompatible with whatseems to me to be the essential characteristicof Capitalism, namely the dependence uponan intense appeal to the money-making andmoney-loving instincts of individuals as themain motive force of the economic machine.Nor must I, so near to my end, stray towardsother fields. Nevertheless I may do well toremind you, in conclusion, that the fiercestcontests and the most deeply felt divisions ofopinion are likely to be waged in the comingyears not round technical questions, wherethe arguments on either side are mainlyeconomic, but round those which, for want ofbetter words, may be called psychological or,perhaps, moral.
