including valuable materials left behind by theGerman Army, accrued to France . Some ships, aproportion of the coal and other deliveries, and thecompensation, payable by Denmark in respect ofSchleswig, fell to Belgium. Italy obtained a portionof the coal and ships and some other trifles. Thevalue of German State property in Poland could notbe transferred to any one but Poland .

But the sums thus received were not available forBeparation. There had to be deducted from them(1) the sums returned to Germany under the SpaAgreement, namely 360,000,000 gold marks, 1 and (2)the costs of the Armies of Occupation.

In September 1921 the Beparation Commissionpublished an approximate estimate, as follows, of thecost of occupation of German territory by the AlliedArmies from the Armistice until May 1, 1921 :
