In Damaskus konnte er sich nicht enthalten, in einemzweiten Brief an den Zaren seiner Begeisterung für die Türken Ausdruckzu geben. Nach Berlin zurückgekehrt, erhielt er von seinem „Kollegen,Freund und Schwippschwager", wie er ihn scherzhaft zu nennen pflegte,die nachstehende Antwort:
