I am glad, that the Cretan affair is at last nearing its end. You know the
reason, why Russia had to take such a prominent part in its Solution
— at the risk of damaging our good and cordial relations with Turkey —
the fear of another Power establishing itself on the island and of course
the wish to put a final stop to the constant bloodshed. There was no
other way of settling the question than sending George as High Com-
missioner of the four Powers — it is a radical measure, but therefore the
only one in my opinion. Our troops shall remain there as long as England
keeps her's on the island. We have both spent a most enjoyable time
here; the autumn has been a real summer to us who come from the
north. One does feel so well being out of doors all day, riding, playing
lawn-tennis etc. and not having to receive daily tiresome ministers.

Ungefähr um dieselbe Zeit war der französischeMajor Marchand von Abangki abmarschiert und hatte Faschoda amoberen Nil besetzt. Es war der letzte schüchterne Versuch der Franzosen ,von ihrer früheren großen Stellung in Ägypten wenigstens einige kleineFetzen im Niltal zu retten. Es ging ihnen aber damit ähnlich wie im 18. Jahr-hundert bei den Kämpfen um Kanada. Bei jedem kolonialen Zusammenstoßmit England ist Frankreich immer wieder auf seine kontinentale Politikzurückgeworfen worden.
