many misleading and mischievous ideas—probably none theless duo to honest conviction—would be dispersed by a carefulperusal of the results of the Professor's patient, industriousinquiry and research. These were the reasons which induced meto undertake the translation. The results of my work—accom-plished in leisure moments snatched from an active businesslife—in translating, I leave to the reader tO' judge and criticiseleniently. I have tried to reproduce as simply as possible- theexact meaning intended in the original. A few additions to theoriginal work have been made by the author, and the whole bookhas undergone careful revision to bring it up to date.
Whatever be the merits or demerits of the translation, Itrust it will be favourably received and carefully studied by all(hose who have the welfare of our industries, and especially theprosperity of the staple trade of Lancashire , at heart.
